Today's Notable Quote from American History

Patrick Henry spoke on March 23, 1775 to the Second Virginia Convention in Richmond, VA in his fiery 'Give me Liberty or Give Me Death' speech

"For my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery... Sir, we have done everything that could be done to avert the storm which is now coming... An appeal to arms and to the God of Hosts is all that is left us!... Sir, we are not weak, if we make a proper use of the means which the God of nature hath placed in our power. Three millions of people, armed in the holy cause of Liberty besides, sir, we shall not fight our battle alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations; and who will raise up friends to fight our battle for us. The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave.."

About one year later, the Declaration of Independence was approved in wording on July 2, 1776. On July 4, 1776, accepted by delegates; on July 8, read in public for the first time, accompanied by the ringing of the Liberty Bell; and on August 2, 1776, the members of Congress signed the parchment copy.
